This is some weird hip hop. It’s not funky fresh, it’s not abrasive political garbage (although there are certainly undertones), and it’s definitely not gang-affiliated. Aesop Rock (born Ian Bavitz) matches non-traditional production sensibilities and avant-garde, highly poetic vocals. If you want to wrap your mind around bizarre lyrics and even weirder beats, you’re in the right place.
Bavitz is the Beatnik of the modern hip-hop scene. He represents underground hip-hop, and therefore a sub-culture which is constantly distinguishing itself from the mainstream. His style incorporates much of the underlying ideas of the Beat Generation culture. The content of his lyrics are both surreal and non-sensical. His use of assonance, alliteration, extended metaphors, breathing patterns point to the strengths of slam poetry. There’s meaning in Bavitz’s rhymes, but it’s more in the ear of the beholder. I’ll let you decipher.
