For a long time, Albert Hammond Jr. was just the grizzled, quasi-bearded, occasionally afro-ed rhythm guitarist for The Strokes. For several years, he and Nick Valensi crafted some of the most pants-creamingly tasteful double guitar patterns this side of the Rolling Stones.
After The Strokes released the half-decent First Impressions of Earth in 2006 they took a lengthy hiatus. Some had children, others participated in SNL skits, and Fabrizio Moretti formed cracked-out side projects with Devendra Banhart.
Mr. Hammond (Jr.), however, released a solo album called Yours to Keep. This is an amazing album. My absolute jam all freshman year, I used to listen to it whilst walking back from school a lot. Really great for that. It has a subtle way of gradually dropping you into a cloudy, drifting mood. It’s definitely not a summer album by any means, more of an autumn/winter vibe so listen to it quickly before March rolls around. “In Transit”, “Bright Young Thing” and “101” are both off that album.
After his first solo album went over well, he decided to release a follow-up since the Strokes weren’t doing shit. ¿Cómo Te Llama? came out two years after YTK. Wasn’t as good. Not bad, but I’d definitely hoped for more. The songs weren’t crafted as well and the arrangements didn’t seem as tight. Nonetheless there were still a couple classics a la his first album. “GfC” and “Borrowed Time” are both from CTL.

IN RELATED NEWS: The Strokes are back together! Fuck yeah! They just released their first Single, “Under Cover Of Darkness”. It cracks. Very optimistic about the new album (which comes out March 22nd on RCA).
