I was beginning to miss the familiar sight of Venue Nightclub, and when I got there I quickly realized why. This venue attracts some of the best talent across genres, and there was no break in continuity this past Wednesday when Just Blaze and Baauer took to the decks. Blueprint Events had just hosted Baauer this past September but it was only due time again, except he returned with more hip hop flavor to this trap fest, as was unleashed by acclaimed producer Just Blaze.
There was some speculation that Just Blaze would have been more geared towards a predominantly EDM or trappy set, but JB stuck to his roots and was all about the rap beats, throwing down heaters from Ludacris to Too $hort to Kendrick. Of his hour-long set, he only moved into trap for the last 20 minutes, and had the house rockin’ preluding Baauer.
It’s no wonder the city of Vancouver goes nuts for this young producer. Baauer is all about the filthy, bass-heavy trap game. He showed the usual love for artists like Flosstradamus and TNGHT, but there was actually a lot more hip hop than expected, coming off that high produced by Just Blaze. Baauer was unafraid to show off their recent collaboration, “Higher”, which despite being played multiple times received only greater hype from the crowd.
There was word that a special guest would conclude the night, following some back and forth Tweets between Baauer and Steve Aoki. Well, Stevie never showed but alternatively, Just Blaze returned to the stage and the dynamic duo concluded the night together with another half hour set, loaded with the likes of tracks from DMX, Hudson Mohawke, and Kanye. The majority of the loyal crowd went hard until the very end.
Be sure to check out Baauer and Just Blaze’s latest collaboration, “Higher”, and for all you American east coasters brace yourself for the next phase of this trap tour!
