Asaf Borger, AKA Borgore, is a dubstep producer and death metal drummer who hails from Israel and has released material on a number of different labels. There has been a bit of controversy around Borgore and the abrasive qualities of his music. In fact, there were voices all around the internet saying that Borgore and other artists like him were “killing” dubstep. What can be said is that Borgore’s “gorestep”, as he likes to call it, did mark a change in the sound of dubstep, and possibly the beginning of the era of harsh wobbles that we hear now from artists like
Skrillex.
I still remember the first time I heard one of Borgore’s songs, it was one of those simple “here listen to this” instances and in no way was I prepared for what was to follow. All of my previous encounters with dubstep had been with songs by more traditional artists like Rusko, Caspa, Benga, or Skream so it would be fair to say I went into my first listen with some preconceived notions as to what dubstep really was and it would be an understatement to say that Borgore eradicated those notions.
