Candy Claws sound like a futuristic drum circle. Often using bells and layered vocals, their tracks are lush and dreamlike. They’ve maintained a quiet presence on the dream pop scene, but stay connected to fans with active social networking profiles. They’re most often compared to Animal Collective and Pet Shop Boys, but their sound is distinct and likenesses don’t really do them justice.
Based out of Fort Collins, Colorado, Candy Claws consists of two core members, and three peripheral members. Their first album, “In the Dream of Sea Life” received a very positive, albeit muted, response from the blogosphere. Though signed to Two Syllable Records, most of their promotion is self-generated. They have an active Tumblr (formerly Blogspot) and Twitter on which they post pictures, tracks, musings, and videos.
And the coolest factoid about them: in creating their sophomore album, “Hidden Lands”, they put Richard M. Ketchum’s The Secret Life of the Forest into a digital translator, ran it back and forth, and used it to inform their note changes and musical lilts.
Sometimes, synth-based indie bands sound hard and wild. This is not true for Candy Claws. They make the kind of music you wish you could listen to underwater.
