It’s been a second since I posted up some fresh new musica, but producer Deft’s new mixtape is so brilliant I had to write it up. I don’t know much about this Croydon native, other than that he’s 23 years old, seriously versatile, and creative. Slightly less shoe-gazey than Phantogram, more electronic and trancey than J Dilla or Madlib. And I’d put my money on Deft over Flying Lotus or Nosaj Thing anyday, sorry to all the FlyLo and Low End Theory fans out there.
He claims on his Bandcamp (where you can download the whole album for free, if you’re cheap enough to not donate a penny like me), that the “tracks that were dug out from my hard drive, tracks where the original files were lost, little bits looped up.” He’s working on Vol. 2, so that’s something to look forward to.
One thing I wish he’d done is have some sick English rappers or vocalists lay down something on these beats. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be slapping the instrumentals like there is no tomorrow but I want something concrete to grab onto. Hopefully that’ll play itself out on the next incarnation of Before.
