What do you get when you mix the alternative rock stylings of Ra Ra Riot and the indie pop lines and rhythm section of Vampire Weekend? The answer to this rhetorical question is Discovery: a band made up of Wes Miles (Vocals: Ra Ra Riot) and Rostam Batmanglij (Keyboards, Guitar, Backing Vocals: Vampire Weekend).

It’s like listening to synth candy, like Fine Young Cannibals meets Jackson 5. Actually, Discovery did cover young Michael Jackson and his brother’s “I Want You Back” not coincidentally to that analysis. Regardless, they’ve received deserved praise for their R&B tempo-bending synth-pop.

This project really is just a fun sidetrack for Miles and Batmanglij so they recruited friends – Angel Deradoorian, one of the many multi-talented artists of Dirty Projectors for the syncopated bubble-gum pop song “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” – and fellow bandmates – Ezra Koering of Vampire Weekend for chorus-heavy “Carby.” Since Batmanglij is the lyricist – among many other parts – for Vampire Weekend, Discovery’s lyrics  accentuate the internal rhymes that he writes so well.

But, wait
Oh, it’s much too late
Oh, and I cannot be walking home
Until I’ve found my love
Oh, the other girls are driven home
So, where’s the freedom in the disco
If you’re all alone

Along with the lax vocal lines and song structure of Miles, these two indie rockers have created a unique, refined sound on their single and only album, LP.

Although they are still ‘together’ they haven’t released anything since LP (July 7th, 2009), leading fans to believe that their focus lies on their previous bands. It’s hard to see them put this project on hiatus since they really do have something special but hopefully only for now – as Vampire Weekend has a new album in the works and Ra Ra Riot recently released an EP – we have LP and its hits to spin.
