Look at the man in the picture above. Now take a minute and imagine digging like he is for years, completely concentrated on one thing: finding that one golden sample to use in your next piece of work. It’s not everyday that you get to see a man like this, one of the most iconic figures in turntablism and Hip-Hop but that day is here folks. Among other tour stops, Joshua Paul Davis otherwise known by his stage name DJ Shadow, is coming to the Royale in Boston, Massachusetts. Not only is this pivotal figure known as the first artist to produce an album entirely with sampled sounds (see below his debut album released on Mo’Wax, Endtroducing…), he’s also worked with renowned artists such as Q Tip, Cut Chemist, Thom Yorke (of Radiohead), E-40, and Mike D (of the Beastie Boys) just to name a few. Shadow coined his own style of sampling which has influenced a plethora of artists today, where he garnered a slew of unrecognized samples through countless hours of digging in the crates and manipulating them piece by piece. If you enjoy trip-hop, thank this man; the term was coined after seeing his style of production. If you enjoy sampling, thank this man; he brought the art to a whole new level. He’s truly one of the most crucial figures when describing today’s interest in Hip-Hop, a critical producer when looking at Hip-Hop’s past, and an essential figure while dreaming of Hip-Hop’s future. You don’t want to miss this one.
Below you can stream the entire album Endtroducing…. which has been deemed by Time magazine one of it’s “All Time” best 100 albums (that’s just one of the awards it’s received, its been awarded others by Spin, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork as well). The album itself is known to have over 100 samples within it and frankly, it’s a beautiful work of art.
