Holy Ghost! [Identity Festival Artist Spotlight]
0

The Metropolitan Jolt is proud to be providing coverage for this year’s Identity Festival. We will be profiling artists performing in the lead up to the September 3rd date at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

Holy Ghost! is the disco-infused duo made up of Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser.  Frankel and Millhiser first met in grammar school.  The band’s productions were initially hip-hop focused, but their sound soon evolved into the poppy-disco arrangements we now know them for.  Holy Ghost! first made a name for themselves with their 2007 single “Hold On.”  Since then they have signed to the world famous New York based label, DFA.

Four years after “Hold On,” Holy Ghost! came out with their debut self-titled album in April 2011.  Although many of the songs on their new album were previously released as singles, the album feels conhesive, fresh and seriously dance-able. Holy Ghost! doesn’t boast a large discography, but every song on their album deserves puts quality first.

One of the standouts from the album is “Jam for Jerry.”  The song was written about the death of Jerry Fuchs, one of my drumming heroes.  ”Well did the sky open up above you in the dark,” Frankel asks as he recalls Jerry Fuchs fall down an elevator shaft in 2009.  The band masterfully weave guilt-ridden vocals with catchy synth hooks. They make the song into something that carries more emotional weight than most of the entire genre of dance-rock summed together.

With their new album, Holy Ghost! have proven themself to be a worthy replacement for DFA’s freshly retired LCD Soundsystem.  Holy Ghost! are set to become one of the definitive American dance-rock bands.

Make sure to catch Holy Ghost! at Identity Festival in Mountain View, CA on September 3rd. They will be performing on the Dim Mak stage.
