José González took the road less travelled. The Argentinian Swede creates some of the most beautiful, silvery music around. It’s hard to believe he began his musical career as a bassist in a hardcore punk band out of Gothenburg, Sweden. There is something to be said for all musical genres but Punk does not rely on its aesthetic but rather on raw emotion. I was first introduced to José González when he collaborated with Zero 7 on their album The Garden. José González’s ethereal vocals on Futures was my first exposure to his music and it paved the way for my interest in his music ever since. After doing some quick research, I came across his 2003 album Veneer. Both Heartbeats and Crosses are instant classics. Slow moving and simple, there is nothing particularly striking about either of these tracks except for their José González-esque delicate, celestial feel. Lastly, a Tiesto remix of Crosses was brought to my attention. True to form, Tiesto does an amazing job by not over-powering the original song and re-creating the track’s ambience while going beyond its original playability.
José González currently performs with the Swedish Band Junip.
