Maryland-based rhymer Logic just released his newest single, ‘My Chain’, last week. After seeing him in concert earlier this summer and immediately downloading his most recent project, http://www.mindoflogic.com/, I’m officially a fan. In an interview this past February, Logic claimed that he can rap on any kind of track and stay true to his style. All rapper-ego qualms aside, I completely agree. In many songs on Undeniable, mostly produced by 6ix - another young artist working to perfect his skills – there is some old school hip hop reference, lyrically or in the beat. The influence of their rapping forefathers is extremely apparent in their work together. Complete with a skit interlude, a shout-out to Nas with “Dead Presidents III,” and a track sampling lines from the movie (500) Days of Summer, Undeniable will undeniably convince you of Logic’s prowess. If you need more proof, peep this freestyle.
Whether over a more underground sound or a mainstream banger, Logic has the ability to make music that people want to hear and send a message every single time. On “My Chain,” a smooth, money-themed track, Logic assures us that:
“My chain shine nice
But I am not defined by the money, not defined by the ice
What defines me/ let me tell you what defines me
Is the heart and the effort I give in every letter in which I write for you
And if you ignorant closed-minded motherf*ckers do not like it
It’s not right for you/ No, it’s not right for you.”
Showcasing his versatile flow and thoughtful lyrics, “My Chain” will only further establish Logic as a force to be reckoned with.
For an example of his homage to his favorite artists, be sure to check out “Relaxation,” off Undeniable, Logic’s vision of A Tribe Called Quest’s “Electric Relaxation.”
