Shalom.
I don’t know anyone with as unique a sound or personality as Matisyahu, a Jewish musician who dons the Orthodox guise and combines rock, reggae, and hip hop– all while inserting Jewish elements. His past is just as fascinating as his music; he indulged in hallucinogenic drugs and followed around the psychedelia-inspired band Phish for a period of time, but took a completely 360 and adopted Orthodox Judaism after a trip to Israel. Even if he’s uber-religious now, much of Matisyahu’s appeal stems from his ability to transcend religion through his music and impress his non-Jewish audience. He does this with powerful social messages, but also beautiful instrumentation. His performances are also a major factor in his success,
“Performing is such a big part of what I do, and there’s a lot about that live energy that you just can’t catch in the studio.”
Matisyahu is known to lay it down with fresh passion and even beatboxing in his concert. He’s playing this Tuesday at The Regency Ballroom in San Fran(cisco) with a live band. The venue is relatively intimate and the acoustics there have been killer in past shows, so we’re in for a good one. Tickets can be bought here. Since he’s such an experienced performer (he just wrapped up an international part of the tour), I expect nothing less than to be blown away by this show.
