[Midnight Mojo] Death Shark – Lakutis
0

Let me relate a little story to you. I had the pleasure of seeing Das Racist, the obnoxiously obscure and odd-ball rap trio (well, duo, because one of them is a ridiculous hype man). Click the orange to read more about them. So DR was doing their thing on stage– dancing like baboons, feeling themselves, writhing all over the place– but I wasn’t paying attention to them. On the turntables was a pale white guy with long blonde hair that looked like it’d gone through a curling iron. His eyes were rolled back and he was completely disoriented– high out of his mind on some concoction of drugs.

All of a sudden he stepped away from the DJ area and was handed a mic. And within seconds, he was spitting fire with his eyes still rolled back and his skin tone a shade lighter than office paper. This guy, although he was ON, was actually rapping well. Well, I connected the dots when I listened to “Im In the Forest,” the debut EP by Lakutis. It’s that guy, the white one. This kid is like if Tyler The Creator had a Michael Jackson skin disease and turned to the Light Side. He’s apparently in with DR, and taking some serious cues from the style they’ve pioneered.

The EP (released December 1st) is pretty damn annoying, because it’s way less nuanced/political/intellectual than Das Racist’s work. But this track Death Shark is standout. Bear through the first 30 seconds of antics and then enjoy the African drums and nonsensical rhyme scheme.
