[Midnight Mojo] Grounds For Divorce – Elbow
0

Sometimes fat hooks can be annoying, gimmicky and show little musical talent. “Grounds for Divorce” by the (obviously) British band Elbow is not one of those cases. Lead singer Guy Garvey’s heavily accented voice is a sing-songy shout, filled with dispair. Although Mark Potter’s guitar and Richard Jupp’s drums aren’t groundbreaking, they fit with the feel of the song. It’s as if the distemper is being conveyed through the instruments and – just like uncontrollable anger – it’s untamed.

What differentiates Elbow from another indie-rock band is their use of acoustic instead of electric guitar. There’s a folk dimension to their verses from the twangy timbre of the guitar. Garvey is just the icing on the cake. Maybe he can’t control it, but his accent is almost as prominent as that of The Kooks lead singer Luke Pritchard – an admirable feat. If that doesn’t make them British enough, they’re brewing and selling their own “Traditional British real ale” called ‘Build A Rocket Boys‘ named after their most recent studio album of the same title. Even with the United Kingdom pulsing through their veins, “Grounds For Divorce” isn’t pushing boundaries, but it’s undeniably catchy.
