Los Angeles rapper Schoolboy Q is making some noise with his album Habits and Contradictions, which dropped mid-January. A member of the “black hippy” movement with the likes of Kendrick Lamar and others, Q’s got a rugged flow that matches his rough, face-tattooed look.
“Hands on the Wheel” is Schoolboy Q’s ode to “weed and brews.” Fellow newcomer and hype-creator ASAP Rocky takes the second verse, showcasing his smooth quick tongue against Q’s more jagged approach. Production on the track is by Washington DC duo Best Kept Secret, known for their work on Wale’s The Mixtape About Nothing. The beat, for lack of a better word, is sick. A wailing female voice sings “Hands on the wheel, uhuh fuck that,” which then fades into Q’s claim that “life for me is just weed and brews.” It’s not hard to believe, especially if you watch the official video for the song.
