[Midnight Mojo] The Shins – Simple Song
0

This gem is the latest release by prominent indie band The Shins. Coming off a very successful Wincing The Night Away, the world has been waiting with bated breath for four years – FOUR YEARS – for James Mercer and his gang to release any new material. The only thing that kept hope alive was the show they would play every now and then.

“Simple Song” starts where The Shins left off, but leads them in a bit different of a direction. It’s more epic than previous endeavors, Mercer seems more confident in himself as a vocalist – complicating and extending his already difficult vocal lines. Sure, he adds the same effects on his voice, but the result is much more sprawling that prior singles – with lyrics that are a bit more relatable and understandable. “Well, this is just a simple song/ To say what you done/ I told you ’bout all those fears/ And away they did run”. His band also seems more confident, adding unexpected riffs and embellishes to their rhythm parts.

Give it a listen and let the dreamy synth and melody lines take you away.
