Cory @ Silence NoGood
This is definitely my favorite local act in Minneapolis right now. Though, I just caught another SOLID GOLD track on Syfy’s Being Human, so I don’t know how “local” they’re gonna be for long – definitely blown’ up big soon.
As far as “New Kanada”, this is the perfect LA theme song (even though their based out of the Midwest). Especially the last part, would be great for a scenic shot of Los Angeles in some movie opener.
Also, had to mention that they remind me of Starfucker (though, SOLID GOLD is a bit more synth sounding). Hit me up with your thoughts or any other close comparisons – would love to hear ‘em.
Of Stars / From Stars (Live) – Datahowler
Dallas is a city traditionally much better known for its cowboys than its musicians. Hopefully that stereotype is in the midst of changing, aided in part by the exceptionally talented, multi-instrumentalist and producer known as Datahowler. His debut album, Slowdrifter (released last month), which showcases his unique blend of luscious, otherworldly synth-hop, d has set the blog world abuzz and is helping to finally put Dallas music on the map. He’s been so kind as to share an exclusive live version of his two sister-songs, Of Stars and From Songs. Though on the album they’re separate, this live version fuses the two, with the first grooving so seamlessly into the second you lose yourself in the twinkling piano and standout guitars without a moment’s thought.
Nat Lefkoff is only a junior in high school, but he has already distinguished himself as one of the very best musicians in the (admittedly small) town of Davis, CA, and in my opinion is one of the best folk singer-songwriters out there today. He has that rare ability to write songs that really makes you feel, not to mention the guitar chops and outstanding voice needed to really get the most out of those songs. It’s hard to listen to this track and think that he has anything other than a very bright musical career ahead.
Well, here’s not just one but two local artists! Yes, i know, that’s cheating but it’s too difficult to choose a single artist to represent the whole local scene.
Anyway, let me introduce KiT, a Paris-based electro band who released their debut single, “Animals”, in April 2010. The Animals EP included seven remixes and one of them (arguably the best) was by Jupiter, another Parisian electro act that’s high up in my list of favorites… KiT + Jupiter = I LIKE
To be honest, I had a hard time coming up with an artist that’s “local”. With the internet, good music is almost impossible to contain based on geography. The term “local” is becoming obsolete. I’m sure there are still some great bands that only play local shows and are kept as a homegrown secret, but I can’t name them. I’m going with Rai Knight because she’s out of Detroit and she’s built a solid team in that area. Then again, I found out about her on the internet.
Against All Odds – Cherry Coke
As soon as I heard the theme for the week was local bands Against All Odds was first to pop into my head. From Whitby, ON, Against All Odds is a post-hardcore band consisting of 4 members. If you’re into a little screaming than this is the band for you. Facebook Page: http://www.facebook.com/weareaao. Enjoy.
All The Time In The World – The Hayday
Denver has a pretty solid collection of alternative rock/pop bands I’ve come to find out and The Heyday is one of my favorites thus far.
IntotheNorthSea – Throw Away Letters
IntoTheNorthSea are pair of 17 year olds from Colchester, UK who are as talented as they are young and just as keen. And unlike a lot of bands from the same scene they match their enthusiasm and ability for the music life with some genuine effort and hours of hard work. The result is music that is fairly extraordinary. As well as lining up some body-nodding bits of melody and harmony they have also put the songs together in their recordings with talent far beyond their years. Listening to the 3 songs on their SoundCloud bands such as The xx, Two Door Cinema Club and maybe even The Shout Out Louds come to mind because it’s fantastic music that should be played everywhere.
Prior to hearing this album, I had all but written off hip-hop with one simple slogan: “rap is crap.” I was wrong, and while Dangermouse’s Adult Swim album was the first to demonstrate such, it really was Crown City Rockers that turned me onto the true beauty of hip-hop.
Digital Dirt – Zion I & The Grouch
This is my favorite track off of Zion I and the Grouch’s first collab album “Heroes in the City of Dope.” The combination of amazing verses, mind blowing instrumentals, complex effects and a catchy chorus make a beautiful, compelling track that you’ll listen to once, and continue to listen to. Check out the second album being released by this duo, “Heroes in the Healing of the Nation,” which drops TOMORROW!
