I first heard Otik at a party and it immediately grabbed my attention among the constant song changes as people fought over control of the speakers. I rushed to my computer afterwards to get my hands on as much of his music as possible and was pleasantly suprised and shocked at the fact that he only had 282 followers on Soundcloud, and his Spill EP was available for free download via mediafire. I could not find any information about this guy anywhere and finally decided to message him on Facebook to find out more.
Humble and courteous in his response, hailing from London, UK, Ashley Thomas a.k.a Otik let me in on some of his influences and his production process. It was as though he had read my mind in naming most of my favorite artists as his influences. “French Fries, Burial, Caribou/Daphni, Bambounou, Throwing Snow, Jamie xx, James Blake and Mount Kimbie” were his words exactly and I totally approve. He went on to tell me that the songs he is most proud of are the ones that have taken him the least amount of time. He said, “If I am really excited about a track it’ll be done by the end of the day.”
The day I had gotten in contact with Ashley, he had just posted a preview of his new track “Good Girl” on his Soundcloud. I was already incredibly impressed, but this new preview of his convinced me that Otik has a very bright future in the electronic music scene. He has just started writing a new EP and hinted that a few labels showed interest in his sound but still a release date has yet to be determined.
