Outside Lands Mix, Part 2: Sound Tribe Sector 9

From Outside Lands Mix, Part 1:

I recently bought my ticket to Outside Lands, the premier Northern-California music event which is hosted in Berkeley’s enchanting People’s Park…wait…I meant to say San Francisco’s gorgeous Golden Gate Park. The festival is cheaper than Coachella, the weather’s going to be nicer, and even though Kanye West isn’t performing it’s well worth it. To get myself, those Metrojolt fans who are also going, and those still thinking about getting a ticket super stoked about this special experience, I’m starting an exploration into the artists performing at the festival. I’ll be choosing big names, unknowns, and in-betweens to expose naked (in the musical, non-figurative sense) for our readers.

Today, I am featuring a little known band based out of Santa Cruz, California– one of the hippie capitals of the world. This music is pure chill vibes, with complex layered electronic sounds and instrumental that combine for a “holy shit” affect. More funky and acoustic than Bonobo, but equally fun to listen to, STS9 takes its listeners into a world of sound, simple as that. This is the type of music that immerses you when you pay close attention to the multitude of riffs, steady drums, and playful lyrics. Somesing almost feels like hip hop, with Dj-scratching and mixing to break up the tone temporarily. Better Day opens with somber violin and piano, with a faint astronaut voice. It then shifts to silence, and the orchestral type sounds pick up. Silence again. Add guitar and emotional female voice, and you’ve got the weight of gold. Almost three minutes into Tokyo, the sound turns into the soundtrack for a chase through a dark urban metropolis– very DJ Shadow-like feelings.

Combinations of sounds again come into play here: rock, indie, electronic, chill vibe, jazz, and other genres still unnamed are given a voice in STS9′s music.
