Phoenix, this Grammy Award winning French Indie Rock group, hails from the beautiful city of Versailles. Vocalist, Thomas Mars, bassist, Deck d’Arcy, and guitarist, Christian Mazzalai started as a garage band at Mars’s house in the suburbs of Paris. Laurent Brancowitz, Mazzalai’s older brother, joined later after a short time in a unsuccessful band named Darlin’ (Brancowitz’s former bandmates Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo later went on to form Daft Punk).

Two years later, the four-man group took on the title of Phoenix, releasing a single on their own record label, Ghettoblaster. Soon after, they were signed on by Paris-based Source Records. Since then, Phoenix has been coming out with a steady flow of albums, most notable is Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which was released back in 2009. The tracks from this album have been featured on many commercials, trailers, TV shows, and more. If all of this wasn’t enough, in January of 2010, the group won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Phoenix has also played at many major music festivals including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and San Francisco’s own Outside Lands.

Their style is characterized by unique songwriting and curiously harmonious vocals. The relaxed and laid-back sounds give off a subdued, but naturally melodious and comforting intonation. All of their songs have a resonance that is smooth, hypnotic, and easy to listen.

Here are some favorites of mine, but remember to also support Phoenix on Itunes!

1901 – Phoenix

Girlfriend – Phoenix

Rome – Phoenix

Fences – Phoenix

Lisztomania – Phoenix (Shook Remix)

This remix of Fences is exceptionally good. It turns Phoenix’s classic Indie Rock into a funky Electronic Dance track. Listen to it here or on Dynamics’s SoundCloud.
