I first came intro contact with Proper Villains, like many others, with his Bass Down Low remix. This dude has banged out some great remixes and I’m excited to see where he goes moving forward with producing. Keep your eye on this guy.
I had a chance last week to ask Jon a few questions:
At Metrojolt we like to start off topic – Which city in the world is your favorite? Why?
New York City. I’ve lived here most of my life and nothing can really compare to the metropolitan lifestyle. At this point, I sort of need the dirt and the noise to maintain my sanity. Also, good pizza at 3am is a birth right.
How did you first get into remixing and creating electronic music?
I was in an industrial/metal band in high school. We would record songs by plugging 2 cassette tape decks together back to back. Super primitive. Then I got the first generation of Sonic Foundries’ Acid program back in about 97-98 and it just kind of went from there. Yes. I am old as fuck.
What’s your set up for producing? (Hardware and Software)
I’m in the process of upgrading my studio. When it’s done it will be a PC, an RME Babyface I/O, a Roland JP-8000 synth and I’ll be running Ableton 8 with tons of plugins
Where do you start when creating a track or remix?
I usually start with the drums. I mix as I go, so it takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour to get my drum track sounding nice & banging. From there, if it’s a remix
I’ll immediately bring in the vocal n’ elements from the original track and work on making them fit in the new context. If it’s an original track, I start messing about on the keyboard until I get a cool riff or melodic idea.
Who have been some of your favorite artists you’ve seen live?
Nine Inch Nails. They were my first rock concert back when I was 14. They really opened my eyes to how you could use electronics in a rock context.
Any future collaborations in the works?
A couple of things. Nothings finished yet, so mums the word.
Who are your favorite DJs, and how do they impact what you do yourself?
Jeff Mills is a god. I can literally make popcorn and watch the exhibitionist mix on youtube for hours. He has such a stylish approach to dj’ing that very few other DJs have. I have a bunch of his old WJLB Wizard mixes that I still rock on my ipod all the time, I really like the aggressive mixing.
