I’m excited to introduce you to one of France’s most renowned modern singer songwriters– the ever sexy and subtle Sebastién Tellier. This French music icon is relatively unknown across the pond but his collection of pop and electronic songs has grown quite a following in his home country. He is currently signed to a French independent label and has released 3 albums since 2000.

L’incroyable Vérité, his first major album, is best characterized under the pop genre with influences from local cabaret and French electronica. His second album, Politics, is best known for the song La Ritournelle. This track is sung in English and features an upbeat melody mainly composed of strings, with a backdrop of simplistic guitar riffs and a light pitter-patter of drums. Of the tracks I have listened to by Tellier, this one ranks highest. It achieves a sense of serenity and calm as Tellier eases the listener along with his soft lyrics.

His third and possibly most popular studio album is called Sexuality. Yeah, that’s right. Tellier is probably the type to have a shit ton of sex. Look at that sexy beard and those over the top shades. Can you say major French pussy magnet? This collection of tunes distinguishes itself from the rest of his body of work; there’s the addition of heavy electronic synths that pair with his trademark pop-y songwriting. Fans of Daft Punk may fall in love with this album because it was produced by the legendary Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. A couple of my favorite songs off this album are Sexual Sportswear and L’amour et La Violence. Sexual Sportswear is a song that slowly builds on synths but never reaches a peak. Definitely a more chill, minimalist vibe. L’amour et La Violence highlights Tellier’s firm grasp on juxtaposition with a simple piano-based beat. Be sure to also check out the Boize Noize “Euro Remix” of L’amour et la Violence. It switches up the feeling a little bit by upping the tempo and adding electronic components that give the song a suspenseful rising action. This classic, fast paced, yet subtle drop will make you feel like revving up the lightcycle and racing around the virtual streets of Tron. Enjoy.
