Back in May, Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher, released his LP Ufabulum. Squarepusher and IDM fans alike rejoiced – the album is nothing short of a sonic journey through space and time. Accompanying music videos only increased general giddiness, with the question on everyone’s mind being: “will I see the electronic wizard this summer?”
If you are one of the many people that flock to Los Angeles historic park for HARD Summer, the answer is a resounding yes. Squarepusher will tear the HARD stage apart right before The Bloody Beetroots with huge, glide-y synth lines and dnb influenced drum lines. His sound walks that fine line between pure, unadulterated euphoria and an evilness that only a select few have tried and even fewer have been able to master. If you’re unsure of what I mean, take a second and listen to Ufabulum. The juxtaposition of soundscape style synths and dark basslines is a sound completely unique to Squarepusher, perfectly embodied in the first single from the album, “Dark Steering”. If the track and accompanying video don’t convince you both that Squarepusher is one of the top acts at this year’s HARD and that being eaten alive by a computer might not be so bad, perhaps the fact that the entire show is live will.
Check out the aforementioned video below, buy Ufabulum here, and be sure to catch Squarepusher at the HARD stage on Saturday.
