Brooklynite Theophilus London II (“that’s my name, it’s not an alias.”), has gotten a lot of hype recently. With his appearance on Letterman mid-February, I think it’s safe to say that he has arrived.

With the obscene amount of sampling and 80′s pop beats being used in independent Hip-Hop these days, it’s almost as though artists are trying to forge a new genre. Hip(ster)-Hop producers are using what sounds like a Animal Collective / Prince / Daft Punk mashup, or in other words: a collection of sounds that have no business even being in the same playlist.

That being said, I really like Theophilus London. His mixtapes fit perfectly in the giant hypocrisy that is my iTunes. Whenever I hear “Humdrum Town” or “Why Even Try” I find myself running, bouncing, and waving my arms around in a way that recalls Kevin Bacon’s dancing montage in footloose.
