Above & Beyond

After DJ Mag’s 2011 Top 100 results aired, authors at The Metropolitan Jolt reacted differently. The one thing we all could agree on: David Guetta shouldn’t be anywhere near the number 1 spot that he just claimed. Who truly belongs there is debated among Metrojolt authors. Janet, Allan, and Ben agree: it should certainly be Above & Beyond.

Their name says it all. Above & Beyond is like a group of mythical creatures that everyone hears about, but doesn’t truly believe exist, until they see them with their own two eyes. No one believed me when I told them: “YES THEY ARE…THEY EXIST…YOU MUST BELIEVE ME!” I was just shunned. They heard the snippets. They saw the Youtube videos. All remained skeptical. Well I’m here to spread the word of Above & Beyond. Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to Group Therapy.

Above & Beyond released, what could be considered, one of the best trance songs of 2011: Sun and Moon. Their sets rain inspiration and hopefulness onto their fans. Above & Beyond help you remember the simple joys of life. They keep a smile fixed upon your face. Above & Beyond take over you bod and mind– sending you to what can only be put as: above and beyond.  I haven’t heard one bad review of their live performances. Tickets for their recent LA show sold out in a record breaking 19 minutes.

This British Trance group formed in 2000, the same year that they started their record label: Anjunabeats. Above & Beyond released their first album, Volume 1, and quickly rose to notoriety. The trio consists of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, Paavo Siljamaki. They have released non-stop hits– from their days as OceanLab with songs like Satellite and Home, to their newer songs like Thing Called Love and You Got To Go.

Also adding to their popularity is the widely respected two hour radio show, Trance Around The World. Mixes feature tracks and guest segments from amazing Anjunabeats, and other well-respected artists.

They have been on tour for the past year, promoting their most resent release: Group Therapy. The three of us caught their Santa Cruz show. Members of the team have also caught them in Las Vegas for EDC, and just this past week in San Francisco. As always, their sets were absolutely amazing.

A theme throughout their live performance is the messages they type for the crowds. For example at EDC, they were deep into a set and this popped up on the big screen:

These little messages accompanied heartfelt music, creating an aura of pure joy.  I really have never left a show feeling so good. No other music can pull so much emotion out of me.

Above and Beyond, we’ll never get over you.
