This is the kind of music I listen to on a cool summer’s eve after a long, satisfying day. Catchy drums that I would categorize as throbs, accompanied by light guitar and keyboard instrumentation, textured sound effects and eerily soothing vocals typify the hard-to-describe sound of Twin Sister, a Long Island band whose first full album (to be released in late September) is highly anticipated by the online music community. But what’s the hype about anyways– what makes Twin Sister so attractive to mega-music publication Pitchfork?
My analysis of Twin Sister is as follows: originating from their first EP Vampires with Dreams and reinforced by their second EP Color Your Life is a sound which defies genre and is in constant dialogue with the music of the past 30 years. Yes, it is in that all-encompassing genre of “indie” music, but when I hear a song like “All Around and Away We Go” I think of roller blade discos. And when “Phenomenons” comes on, I think of 80′s soft rock. Or the beginning of “Nectarine,” which has the feeling of Simon and Garfunkel’s complex guitar strums. There seems to be a nostalgic sound weaved into each of Twin Sister’s tracks, which evokes memories of better times. That is a recipe for success in a world where escaping the horrors and banality of our current reality (economic and emotional) is so crucial for so many people.
