The Walkmen’s newest album, Heaven, is a natural evolution of their sound. No drastic change, because that’s not what this band is about. Opener “We Can’t be Beat” is so beautiful and simple. The band has a way of making youthful anthems that sound like they’re coming from a group with 40 years experience. Nothing is ever overdone. Sometimes the way they hold back creates for an intentionally tense feel. The frenzied drums combined with that twangy guitar and Leithauser’s clenched fist of a voice can make you beg for their songs to burst. But on this track, The Walkmen show a mature side. It’s mellow, pretty, slow, and patiently brings you to a country style ending that assures everybody, ‘We can’t be beat. The world is ours.” Enjoy it below.
