On Wednesday night, I headed out to the Oakland Metro Operahouse to check out Club WOMP, which I’ve heard so much about and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Located only a couple blocks away from Broadway and 3rd Street, you could hear the massive bass of the Operahouse’s sound system at the end of the block. With high hopes, I rushed into the line full of scantily clad women and men whose kandies ran up their arms. Everyone seemed as excited as I was for the next 4 hours of the night.
Security went by smoothly and quickly (definitely a plus because I’ve had to deal with some asses of security guards at clubs in SF) and within seconds of entering the line, I danced my way to the Opera House’s main stage. A combination of red, green and blue lasers filled the room but at first, the club seemed a bit too lit. Girls danced behind two white screens that were set next to the DJ table, which gave off some beautiful silhouettes. This gave Club Womp a different night club mood, almost as if you were at a club in Las Vegas. At that point, Russ Mack was mixing electro house bangers which gave people enough energy to get down on the dance floor. There were a good amount of people who were chillers– in the background talking and sipping drinks. It was like they needed a cue to start jumping up and down with the rest of the crowd (plus the speakers went out twice). I took this as a signal to check out the dubstep room.
The dubstep room was through a small entrance in the back of the main stage and it was there that the night got interesting. The DJ’s were spinning on CDJs while using a Serato setup and you could tell the crowd was feeling the grimy, filthy dubstep (so much so that it made me want to take a 10 minute shower afterwards). There was also a drumset set up next to the DJ table, which was later used in a live performance (something completely new to me) by Rugby vs Krishna. It was absolutely awesome; I wish they used it more than once.
Around 11:00, I ventured back to the electro/house room where the energy level had risen dramatically. Maybe it was just the DJ, or the time slot, but within an hour the dance floor was filled up to the point where you couldn’t dance without getting someone’s handful of sweat in your face because of the lack of room. People shuffled, indulged in lightshows, and some even danced up on stage in front of the DJ. Security never bothered to kick the people off the stage because everyone was having such a good time.
It was around 11:30 that Club WOMP broke into a top club experience; Ross.FM dropped the original Satisfaction track and consequently, J.Rabbit’s remix of Satisfaction. The club (me including) went bonkers! The energy level rose considerably and as I looked around, it was obvious that everyone was having the time of their life. Ross FM and WhiteNoize kept this energy level going for as long as I could tell with a good track selection and good mixing.
We ended the night with DJ U-Love in the dubstep room who finished off Club WOMP with a dubstep/drumstep/drumnbass mix with a superb track selection; a perfect way to end the night. A couple of the tracks that caught my attention were High Contrast’s Show Me Love drum ‘n bass remix and a drum ‘n bass remix of Hit the Road Jack. We got a chance to talk to DJ U-Love after the show. I was extremely impressed because she learned to DJ on turntables a few years back, instead of the all too typical controllers. It was nice to see someone who learned on vinyl again.
All said and done, it wasn’t the amount of people at Club WOMP that made it a crackin’ event, rather it was the pure amount of energy and the quality of the music that sealed it for me. You won’t be disappointed; I know I’m definitely going back next week.
